What

Angle Connection Project

Where

Michigan State University
and our middle school

When

During the geometry unit.

Why

To create a connection to angles in the real world and visit the beautiful campus of Michigan State University and receive a tour.

 Goal:

Have students make a connection between geometry and the real world.

Access:

Students must know the how to identify the angles by name and know what they look like.  Prior to class students must have filled out the chart provided to participate in the scavenger hunt.

New:

In this case the content isn’t new, but the environment is new to the students.

Assessment:

Students must take their completed homework sheet (attached) with them on the bus to campus.  When we arrive to campus a tour will be provided for the students.  Since Michigan State University is so big, this will help my students get a bit more familiarized with their surroundings and show them the campus in case they would like to go their someday.

After the tour the will huddle back up at the International Center.   Here the students will form groups of three and receive a small bag with a map of campus, directions, pen, and a digital camera.  The maps are marks in the areas the students are allowed to explore, for the sake of time and safety. At this point we will refer to the direction sheet the students received.  “You have two hours to complete the task of finding as many of each type of angle that you can.  The photo should be taken close up to display the angle and then farther away to show where we found the angle.  Be creative (and safe) on your search.  It can be both inside and outside of buildings.”  After the time we will eat lunch on campus and then head back home.

Wrap up activity:

When returning to school students will need to create an animoto video of their findings.  The video will have the title of their project, their names, a picture of what the angle looks like on paper, and then the collection of what angles in the real world look like. We will work on this portion of the project for 2 class periods.  The videos will then be shown in class.
